Lord Nelson
The water of St Helen’s from wells on the village Green had excellent keeping qualities and would remain fresh for a voyage to the West Indies and back. Legend has it
that Admiral Lord Nelson’s last view of England was of the Old Church at St Helen’s in 1805 when his ship, HMS Victory, stopped to take on “keeping water” before setting sail for the Battle of
Trafalgar. On Saturday 14th. September 1805, Admiral Lord Nelson boarded HMS Victory lying at anchor off St. Helens near to this spot. HMS Victory with HMS Euryalus in company, sailed the following
morning,
Sunday 15th September, to join the Fleet off Cadiz prior to the Battle of Trafalgar 21st October 1805.
